The Colonial Downs Handicapping Challenge will consist of a one-day, online handicapping contest taking place through Xpressbet, TVG and 4NJBETS only. The $600 contest ($300 entry fee, $300 bankroll) will take place Tuesday, August 16.


  • All players must declare their tournament ADW (Xpressbet, TVG or 4NJBETS) at time of registration. Players must have an existing account with ADW in order to participate in the contest.
  • Each player will be assigned a temporary online handicapping contest account through either Xpressbet, TVG or 4NJBETS.
  • Players will be provided login credentials to access account.
  • Online accounts will be preloaded with tournament bankroll ($300).
  • All contest wagers must be made through this temporary contest account. It is a player’s responsibility to distinguish between contest and personal online accounts. At conclusion of contest play, remaining bankroll will be transferred to the player’s personal online account.

Tuesday, August 16 – $600 buy-in ($300 entry fee, $300 bankroll)


  • Challenge wagering allowed on the full card from Colonial Downs.
  • Win, Place, Show, Exacta and/or Trifecta wagering only.
  • Must wager on a minimum of five (5) races. No max.
  • $60 minimum bet per race. No maximum.

All entry fees will be returned as prizes. All prizes listed are approximations. Exact prizes will be determined by the exact number of participants.

  • Based on 150 entries, total prize pool is $45,000. To consist of:
  • 2 BCBC Full Seats
  • 2 NHC Prize Packs – includes flight reimbursement capped at $400, hotel stay)
  • Top 5 Split $14,400 cash
    • 1st – $7,200
    • 2nd – $2,880
    • 3rd – $2,160
    • 4th – $1,440
    • 5th – $720
  • At the conclusion of the contest, the Top 4 finishers (in order of finish) will select their seat (BCBC or NHC).


  • The National Horseplayers Championship (NHC) is an annual “world-championship” handicapping event hosted in Las Vegas. The 2023 NHC will take place January 2023 at Bally’s Las Vegas. To participate, a player must qualify over the course of the year. There is no buy-in option. The NHC typically consists of 500-600 of the country’s top horseplayers. Prizes awarded at the NHC total approximately $3 million. The overall NHC winner is declared “Champion Horseplayer” and receives an award at the Eclipse Awards. For more information on the NHC, go to
  • Players must be pre-registered with all entry fee and bankroll paid in advance. All TVG/4NJBETS participants must be pre-registered by noon on Monday, August 15. Xpressbet players must pre-register by noon the day of the contest.
  • $600 tournament buy-in is not refundable. Buy-in must be paid in advance.
  • In the event of race cancellation or postponement. For a card that is cancelled in its entirety, the contest will be rescheduled at the discretion of Colonial Downs and contest management. For a card this is partially cancelled, if seven (7) or more races have been run, the contest will go official as-is and the minimum race rules (must bet five races) will be waved. If fewer than seven races have been run, the contest will be considered a “no-contest.” Players will be refunded their $300 entry fee. The contest may be rescheduled at the discretion of Colonial Downs management.
  • Entrants keep all pari-mutuel winnings.
  • Entrants cannot add additional cash to tournament bankroll. Adding additional cash to bankroll results in automatically disqualification.
  • Maximum 2 entries per person.
  • Must be an NHC tour member prior to the start of the contest to be eligible for NHC seats.
  • If a player who is double NHC qualified finishes in a position where only an NHC seat is available to be selected, that player will receive $2,500, and the NHC seat will be awarded to the next finisher.
  • In the event of a tie for any position, the amount of winning win wagers will determine order of prize selection.
  • Players must place all wagers personally. No person shall directly or indirectly act as an intermediary, transmitter or agent in placing wagers for the player. Additionally, collusion amongst players may serve as grounds for disqualification.
  • All official track rulings apply to horses selected for tournament play.
  • Colonial Downs, Global Tote, and Amtote are not responsible for shut outs or incomplete transactions. No exceptions under any circumstances. All wagers should be placed early to avoid being shut out.
  • The decisions of the judges and Colonial Downs in all matters or disputes relating to this contest are final.
  • Must be 18 years or older by August 16, 2022 to participate in the contests.
  • Must be 21 years of age by January 1, 2023 to attend the 2023 National Horseplayers Championship.
  • Winners are responsible for all applicate state and federal taxes and may be required to complete a W-9 Form.
  • Participants agree to have their name or image appear in any publicity material.
  • Employees of Colonial Downs, the Virginia Horse Racing Commission, Xpressbet, TVG, Amtote and Global Tote are not eligible.
  • Licensed owners, trainers or jockey agents may not wager on any race in which they have a vested interest and must declare said race(s) in advance.
  • Colonial Downs reserves the right to make changes to the contest rules and format as necessary.
  • ODS Technologies, L.P. (TVG/4NJBETS) is not a sponsor of this challenge.
  • Players participating through a TVG/4NJBETS account must meet TVG/4NJBETS’ account registration requirements, including age and residency requirements.
