In the third quarter of 2025, Rosie’s Emporia contributed a total of $22,460.87 through its Rosie’s Gives Back program to support trusted community partners serving public safety, child development, education, mental health and overall wellbeing, and general community outreach.

Recipients of contributions include:

• $6,000 to Community Youth Center— Empowering the future of the Emporia-Greensville Community by building a healthy spirit, mind and body for all.
• $7,500 to Emporia Police Department—This contribution will support the Department’s community outreach initiative to provide gifts and meals to families in need during the holiday season.
• $4,961 to Reach Initiative—To empower youth in Emporia, VA by providing resources and opportunities that foster academic success and build a brighter future
• $4,000.00 to Rise Against Hunger—A global movement to end hunger by nourishing lives, empowering communities and responding to emergencies.

~ Upscale gaming and entertainment parlor to open in Henrico following unanimous 5-0 vote of approval from Virginia Racing Commission ~

HENRICO, Va. (September 15, 2025)—Today, the Virginia Racing Commission voted unanimously to grant a license to Roseshire, a new upscale gaming and entertainment venue in Henrico County from Churchill Downs Incorporated. Roseshire is scheduled to open on September 29, 2025, in the Staples Mill Shopping Center at the intersection of Staples Mill Road and Glenside Drive.

“Roseshire will be an upscale and welcoming entertainment and gaming parlor with exciting games, great entertainment, and top tier food and beverage, including an innovative mocktail program we are launching just for Roseshire,” said Jeremy Callahan, General Manager of Roseshire. “With this unanimous vote of approval from the Virginia Racing Commission, we are thrilled to welcome guests to Roseshire beginning Monday, September 29!”

Roseshire has hired nearly 100 team members to ensure an exceptional experience for guests. The venue will feature 175 innovative historical horse racing machines (HRM), as well as live entertainment, simulcast wagering on horse racing around the country, and exceptional food and beverage options including an extensive mocktail menu developed just for Roseshire.

Churchill Downs Incorporated, which also owns Colonial Downs Racetrack, Rosie’s Gaming Emporiums, and The Rose Gaming Resort, invested approximately $35 million to develop Roseshire.

Revenue generated at Roseshire and other HRM venues support Virginia’s $2+ billion equine industry including the state’s growing thoroughbred racing program. NEW KENT, Va. (Aug. 9, 2025) –Magic Cap Stables’ Fort Washington saved his best for last, unleashing a powerful late kick and seizing the lead in the last jumps of the Grade 1 Arlington Million on Festival of Racing Day at Colonial Downs.

Trained by Shug McCaughey, Fort Washington outfinished Grand Sonata by half a length, while his stablemate Integration, who was in the mix until the final stages, finished third. Ridden by jockey Junior Alvarado, Fort Washington stopped the clock in 1:59.58 for the 1¼ miles over a firm turf course.

Settling in the rear of the field of seven, Fort Washington waited patiently as Time Song led the way, speeding through sharp opening calls of :23.94 and :48.36. Mystik Dan and Runaway Storm rated in second and third until entering the far turn when Integration began advancing on their outside and both had to quicken. As Grand Sonata hugged the rail to rally, Fort Washington built his momentum widest of all down the stretch. Integration and Grand Sonata emerged in front with a furlong to go, but Fort Washington outkicked the duo home. Mystik Dan stayed on for fourth.

“I wanted to make sure he got comfortable,” Alvarado said. “He’s a tricky horse to ride sometimes. When he’s at his best, you know it right away. Today I felt that going into the first turn. I wanted to make sure I saved enough ground so that I had a big punch at the end. When I swung out in the clearing he finished up very strong. My horse has a powerful turn of foot.”

Sent off at 5-1, Fort Washington paid $13.40, $6.00, and $3.00. A newly minted millionaire, Fort Washington’s lifetime earnings now total $1,352,182 from a career record of 28-7-3-8 that now includes four graded stakes wins.

New Kent, Va. (Aug. 9, 2025) – Domeko Taylor LP’s Charlene’s Dream was sent straight toward the front, took command into the first turn and never looked back, drawing off late to win Saturday’s 35th running of the $500,000 Grade 2 Beverly D. Stakes  by 1½ lengths over the German-bred Spanish Eyes at Colonial Downs as part of the Virginia track’s Festival of Racing.

Trained by Ed Moger Jr. and ridden by Javier Castellano, Charlene’s Dream completed the 1 3/16 miles over firm turf in 1:53.74.

In the early stages of the race, Charlene’s Dream and the Irish-bred Be Your Best (IRE) opened up six lengths on Beach Bomb (SAF) through the stretch run. Into the first turn, Charlene’s Dream moved into the lead after a quarter-mile in :23.78. She maintained the advantage up the backside with Be Your Best tracking just off her hip through a half-mile in :48.30. Positions remained unchanged entering the far turn as Castellano tried to slowed the tempo. In mid-stretch, Charlene’s Dream repelled the bid Be Your Best’s before edging clear to the wire. Spanish Eyes closed late to grab second, with Be Your Best holding third. They were followed by Duvet Day (IRE) followed by 8-5 favorite Beach Bomb and Chick’s Shadow.

“I tried to watch the replay a couple of times from her last three races,” Castellano said. “It seems like she is the type of horse that doesn’t like to take a hold early part of the race. I let her go and on the backside I gave her a little bit of a break. (Be Your Best) engaged me at the top of the stretch but she was able to kick on strongly at the end.”

Charlene’s Dream, sent off at 5-2 in the field of six fillies and mares, returned $7.20 to win.

The Beverly D. was Charlene’s Dream’s sixth victory from 11 starts. The 4-year-old daughter of Qurbaan is out of the War Front mare Clara Kelly. She was bred in Texas by Eric Moreau-Sipiere & Randi Moreau-Sipiere. Charlene’s Dream’s victory earned her connections $310,000 to boost her career bankroll to $645,374.

The Beverly D. Stakes is named in honor of Beverly Duchossois, wife of Richard Duchossois, the former owner of Arlington International Racecourse. The race was first run in 1987 at Arlington. Aside from one running at Churchill Downs in 2022, the Beverly D. has been held at Colonial Downs since 2023. Last year’s winner, Moira, went on to capture the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf (G1) at Del Mar.

NEW KENT, Va. (Aug. 9, 2025) – Rocker O Ranch’s Giocoso sat the perfect rail trip, cut the corner and powered home to win the $500,000 Grade 2 Secretariat by a length over Simulate on Festival of Racing Day at Colonial Downs.

With jockey Ben Curtis in the irons, the Keith Desormeaux trainee covered one mile over a firm turf course in 1:35.36.

“The mile was always going to suit him,” Curtis said. “A couple went forward and I got a beautiful sit. He relaxed beautifully on the back. When the seam came, I had so much horse, I knew he was going to take it. We know he stays, so I had all the boxes ticked.”

Asked to establish forward position behind the leaders into the first turn, Giocoso found himself tucked on the rail in third with Antisocial to his outside in second and Maui Strong leading the way through opening calls of :23.78 and :48.30. Giocoso saved ground through the far turn as Curtis remained patient behind horses. When he saw daylight at the top of the stretch, Curtis asked and Giocoso punched up the rail gamely to take the lead by the sixteenth pole and hold safe through the wire. Simulate flew late to win the photo for second over Antisocial.

At odds of 9-2, Giocoso returned $11.40, $5.00, and $3.60. With a career record of 10-3-1-1, the Not This time colt bred in Kentucky has amassed $524,271 in lifetime earnings.

NEW KENT, Va. (Aug. 9, 2025) – Four undercard stakes were run on Festival of Racing Day at Colonial Downs, and the winners of the sibling dirt stakes, Rolando and Reputation made it known they are serious players in their divisions after dominating their 3-year-old rivals in the $100,000 Petramalo Mile and seven-furlong $100,000 Tyson Gilpin, respectively.

The added-money action on Saturday kicked off with St. George Stable’s Rolando wiring the Petramalo and setting a track record. Going one mile over a fast main track in 1:33.55, Rolando topped the previous mark of 1:33.70 set by Continuation in 2021.

With Hall of Fame jockey John Velazquez in the irons, the Fausto Gutierrez trainee got the jump on the field, led comfortably throughout, and finished four lengths ahead of Barbadian Runner. Lured Away rallied from the back of the pack to run third.

“You ride a horse like this you don’t have to do much,” Velazquez said. “I was hoping someone else went to the front and I would sit off of them but the way he broke today I wasn’t going to fight him. I kept him five wide until we got to the turn and then dropped him down. It was his first start after a long break so I was just concerned about getting him settled early.”

Sent off at 3-1, Rolando returned $8.80. Notching his second stakes score, Rolando added $60,000 for a total bankroll of $232,860 and a career record of 8-4-1-2.

Facing seven fillies, JR Ranch and MyRacehorse’s Reputation was equally dominant, taking the Tyson Gilpin by 6¾ lengths, covering the seven furlongs in 1:21.14.

Trained by Gustavo Delgado, Reputation broke in the back of the pack but was urged into the race by jockey Javier Castellano, who guided her through traffic while tracking the front-running Impulse Buy. After splitting horses in the far turn, Reputation bid for the lead at the eighth pole and pulled away in dominant fashion. Impulse Buy stayed on for second and G W’s Girl finished third.

“That was a dream trip,” Castellano said. “(They went) 21.44, (I was) right behind the speed, saved all the ground, split horses, stepped up outside, and she cleaned up really well.”

Sent off at 3-1, Reputation returned $8.00. Reputation’s career record of 6-3-0-1 totals $158,822 in lifetime earnings.

Older turf sprinters clashed in the $150,000 Van Clief and $150,000 Andy Guest, both going 5½ furlongs across a firm course.

Flying late in the Van Clief, Elizabeth Merryman and Marc Detampel’s Witty rallied from the back of the pack to mow down his seven male rivals across the lawn and stop the clock in 1:02.52.

Piloted by Jaime Rodriguez, Witty outkicked Had to Have him in the final strides to win by a neck. Sent off at 3-1, Witty paid $8.00. Bred and trained by Elizabeth Merryman, the 6-year-old multiple stakes winner now has a lifetime bankroll of $897,782 from a record of 33-11-11-1.

In the Andy Guest, The Estate of R. Larry Johnson’s Hollywood Walk cut the corner through the turn and rallied up the rail to beat six fillies and mares by three-quarters of a length. Odds-on favorite Mrs. Gambolini ran wide to finish second.

Trained by the current meet leading conditioner Mike Trombetta, Hollywood Walk was piloted by Mychel Sanchez, whose perfect ride aboard the 2024 Camptown victress was the difference between first and second in Saturday’s Tyson Gilpin.

“I’m really happy that we finally got the win because I’ve had a couple seconds and thirds with her,” Sanchez said. “She has got a lot of heart. She always gives you everything she has. She’s such a big mare–they do such a great job with her. I wanted to be on the rail right from the beginning because I knew (front-runner Bosserati) lugs out a little bit and I’d have room. I try to show up on days like this.”

Sent off at 8-1 odds, Hollywood Walk paid $19.00. Maryland-bred and Virginia-certified, the Larry Johnson homebred is a half sibling to Mindframe, one of the current leaders in the older male route division. From 26 starts, Hollywood Walk tallies 6-4-8 with $482,731 in lifetime earnings.
