Courageous Chesterfield Teenager to Perform Prior to New Kent County Virginia Derby Horse Race
Shayla “Shayy” Winn, the Chesterfield, Va., teenager who inspired millions as a contestant on “American Idol” while overcoming her loss of sight, will sing the National Anthem on Saturday evening, Aug. 31 at Colonial Downs, as part of the festivities on Virginia Derby Night.
The 18-year-old Winn became “the Pride of Richmond” this year when she advanced to Hollywood become among the top 40 contestants in the “American Idol” competition on ABC. During the fall of her senior year at Thomas Dale High School, Winn began suffering from deteriorating eye sight and underwent surgery to remove a cyst from her brain. Her amazing story and moving audition before the “American Idol” judges last September was a singular emotional moment for a nation of viewers.
