NEW KENT, VA. (March 14, 2026) — Three undercard stakes were featured Virginia Derby Day at Colonial Downs, as Juddmonte’s Chasten rallied late to win the first division of the inaugural $100,000 Fasig-Tipton Sandy Bottom Stakes, Eunomia stalked and pounced to capture the second division, and Graham Grace Stable’s Tour Player powered past dueling leaders to take the $100,000 Royal New Kent.
Tracking outside the leaders, Juddmonte’s Chasten moved into high gear at the top of the stretch to wear down a stubborn Her Laugh and score in the first of two divisions of the Sandy Bottom.
Trained by Brad Cox and ridden by Christian Torres, Chasten covered the mile distancein track record time of 1:33.40.
After breaking in a tight spot, Chasten settled in midpack as Brown Sugar set the pace with Her Laugh pressing. Advancing out of the far turn, Chasten wore down Her Laugh in the final strides to win by a half-length. Her Laugh finished second, while Passage East rallied for third after a slow start.
“(Cox) had the filly ready for me,” Torres said. “So I just kept her out of trouble and set her down at the top of the stretch.”
Chasten returned $9, $3.60 and $2.40. A half-sister to two-time champion Older Dirt Female Idiomatic, Chasten’s career record now stands at 6-3-1-0, with $195,034 in lifetime earnings.
St. Elias Stable, WSS Racing, Turf Express and Stefania Farms’ Eunomia stalked and pounced to win the second division of the Sandy Bottom, covering the mile over her six older rivals in 1:34.21. Making her third start since joining Saffie Joseph Jr.’s barn, Eunomia was ridden by Flavien Prat.
“She traveled very well all the way around,” Prat said. “ The key was getting her to relax and after that she performed for me.”
Sitting right off the pace set by Queen Azteca, Eunomia bided her time before surging past the leader in mid-stretch and holding firmly to win by 2¾ lengths. Queen Azteca stayed on for second. Think Fast ran third.
Sent off as the odds-on favorite, Eunomia paid $3.60, $2.40 and $2.10. The 4-year-old Tiz the Law filly improved her record to 13-4-0-2 and boosted her bankroll to $246,193.
Graham Grace Stable’s Tour Player made a devastating move past dueling leaders, powering home to win the $100,000 Royal New Kent. Trained by Whit Beckman and ridden by Flavien Prat, Tour Player covered the mile in 1:33.57.
“He was a real pro out there,” Prat said. “He jumped well, then settled down nicely on the backside, and he was there for me when I asked him to make his move. The track is in great condition, and I’m very grateful to be here.”
After breaking sharply and settling between rivals, Tour Player rated behind a contested pace as Dragoon Guard and Komorebino Omoide dueled through opening fractions of 22.32 and 43.97. Advancing on the far turn, Tour Player took command at the quarter pole and drew off to win by 1¼ lengths. Dragoon Guard finished second. Raise Cain ran third.
“It was a tough race even with some scratches,” Beckman said. “We ran him pretty quick after buying him, and since his first race with us we made a couple of adjustments, which paid off. He was much better behaved in the paddock today and he showed it on the track in the race.”
Tour Player paid $9.20, $2.80 and $2.10. The 5-year-old American Pharoah colt improved his lifetime record to 11-5-0-1 and has bankrolled $381,173.
