First look at progress on revamped Colonial Downs Racetrack

RICHMOND, Va. (WAVY) — Officials are providing a first look at the progress made on the revamped Colonial Downs and a betting facility in New Kent County.
Since breaking ground, the $300 million project is quickly taking shape. It’s resulted in the creation of 80 jobs — with a total of 800 are expected by the time the project is completed.
Live horse racing is scheduled to return to Colonial Downs in August, for the first time since the track closed in 2014. Chicago-based Revolutionary Racing bought the racetrack for more than $20 million last year.
On Monday, officials held a behind-the-scenes look at the construction progress for Colonial Downs and Rosie’s Gaming Emporium — an off-track betting facility that’s scheduled to open in April — for members of the media.
“Colonial Downs is obviously the track. It’s kind of the anchor and why we’re here for the horse racing. And Rosie’s are essentially our satellite wagering facilities that will have historical horseracing games throughout the Commonwealth,” said Colonial Downs Group representative Aaron Gomes.

The remodeling of Colonial Downs is being handled by the all-female Norfolk-based interior design company called Within.
