NEW KENT, Va. (Aug 1, 2026) — Newstead Stables’ South African-bred Gimme a Nother (SAF) wore down the stubborn pacesetter Achieve in the final strides to capture the Grade 2, $500,000 Beverly D. on Festival of Racing Day at Colonial Downs, adding another graded stakes triumph to an already distinguished resume.
A multiple Group 1 winner in her native South Africa, the Graham Motion trainee earned her third graded stakes victory since joining his barn ahead of the 2025 season. Ridden by John Velazquez, Gimme a Nother covered 1 3/16 miles in 1:54.28, the longest winning distance of her career.
Settled in fourth through the opening stages, Gimme a Nother tracked the pace set by Achieve, who dictated fractions of :24.77 and :49.34. Ranging up alongside Somethinabouther entering the stretch, Gimme a Nother gradually wore down the resolute leader, getting her neck in front in the final strides. Achieve was a game second, while Somethinabouther finished third.
“John (Velazquez) asked me if I was nervous, and I said yes,” Motion said. “I wasn’t sure she’d get there.”
Motion said the mare has continued to flourish since arriving from South Africa after an injury interrupted her momentum late last season.
“She went 7-for-7 in South Africa before I had her,” Motion said. “It takes a while to adjust when they come over here. I thought at the end of last year she was really coming into herself, but she came up with a little injury and we missed the Breeders’ Cup. Hopefully we’re back on track. She’s a remarkable filly and just the kindest horse around the barn. Hopefully we get her back to the Breeders’ Cup.”
Gimme a Nother returned $5.20, $3.40 and $2.80. Achieve paid $8.40 and $5.80, while Somethinabouther returned $5.40.
The victory improved Gimme a Nother’s record to 14-10-3-0 and boosted her career earnings to $811,373.
Additional Quotes
Sonny Leon, jockey of runner-up Achieve
“She stretched out so nicely. She did everything beautifully. I was able to set the pace the whole way, but we got beat by the best filly today. She kept fighting through the stretch. She has a lot of talent, and I knew she belonged with fillies like these at this level.”
Brendan Walsh, trainer of third-place finisher Somethinabouther
“I’m never disappointed with her. The trip unfolded exactly as we planned it. At one point I thought if things went our way, she might win it. It was a really good effort.”
