IT AIN’T OVER YET: KEITH AUSTIN, ENLIGHTEN AND THE ART OF THE CLAIM

NEW KENT, Va. (Aug 18, 2026) —Keith Austin spent much of last winter at Fair Grounds trying to win a shake. On Saturday at Colonial Downs, he hopes the horse he finally landed can help carry him all the way to the Claiming Crown.

Austin will send out Enlighten in the $50,000 Ready’s Rocket Express Qualifier on Claiming Crown Showcase Day, a six-furlong dirt test for horses which have started for a claiming price of $8,000 or less. The first two finishers earn berths in the Claiming Crown.

For Enlighten, the race represents a sharp departure from the record he built before joining Austin’s barn. The 6-year-old son of City of Light has made 18 career starts, 14 of them on turf, and has never raced at six furlongs. His best performances have come in longer races on turf.

Austin believes the horse may have been telling everyone something different all along.

“I think he’s a come-from-behind sprinter,” Austin said.

It is a theory months in the making.

Austin claimed Enlighten for owner Charles Beacom at Fair Grounds after losing four consecutive shakes on other horses he had tried to acquire.

“This was like my fifth one so far that I’d put in for,” Austin said. “And the first four, I got out-shook every single time.”

Seven claims were entered for Enlighten. Austin did not expect to win this one, either — especially after Enlighten broke last and turned in a disappointing performance that afternoon.

“There’s seven of us in there this time,” Austin remembered thinking. “There’s no way I’m gonna get him.”

Then the racing office pulled the pill.

“Keith Austin.”

Suddenly, the horse was his.

At the time, Austin was trying to rebuild his own stable. A former professional jockey, stakes-winning trainer and longtime horseman, he has worked for some of racing’s most prominent trainers, including Hall of Famer D. Wayne Lukas. He also portrayed Hall of Fame jockey Laffit Pincay Jr. in Disney’s “Secretariat.”

But experience alone could not solve the problem Austin faced as he attempted to reestablish his operation. He needed horses.

During the 2025-26 Fair Grounds meet, Austin was galloping for other barns while looking for owners willing to give him another opportunity as a trainer. Beacom did, and Austin began rebuilding around Enlighten.

When Enlighten arrived at the barn, Austin remembers looking at him and making the situation simple.

“You know what, buddy? It’s me and you. That’s it,” Austin said. “There’s no excuses for you or me.”

Austin’s approach with Enlighten focused as much on what he chose not to do as on what he did. He does not believe every horse improves through more training and faster workouts.

“So many of these horses just need time off,” Austin said. “It’s nuts how hard they work these horses.”

Austin believed Enlighten already possessed the most important quality.

“He’s already got heart,” he said. “We know that.”

Enlighten rewarded that confidence in his first start for Austin, rallying to win a one-mile race on a sloppy main track at Evangeline Downs. The victory showed Enlighten could handle dirt, but Austin was still trying to determine what distance suited him best.

Enlighten’s previous connections had mostly campaigned him as a turf route horse, and Austin understood why.

“You’ve got Pletcher. You’ve got Mike Maker,” Austin said. “These guys know. They’re not stupid. Don’t change what’s not broken, you know what I mean?”

His initial instinct was not to overhaul what had worked before. But the longer Austin studied Enlighten, the more he questioned whether the horse’s lack of sharp early speed had led others to assume he was better going longer.

Austin looked at Enlighten’s workouts, typically in the 48- to 50-second range, and began considering another possibility.

“If you look at it, he didn’t have a whole lot of speed,” he said. “So I think that’s why these guys thought, ‘Oh, he can run long.’”

Austin had a different question.

“Is he finishing out going long? Is that his best race?”

He used the example of a good route horse beginning its career in a maiden sprint. A horse might not possess the kind of raw speed associated with true sprinters, but class, ability and heart can still allow him to make an impact.

Then came the idea that eventually brought Enlighten to Colonial Downs.

“What if his best race is a sprint, three-quarters, coming from off the pace?”

Austin was not trying to make Enlighten faster early. He wanted to find a distance that might make the horse’s late run more effective.

Two turf starts at Mountaineer — one at a mile and one at seven furlongs — did not provide the answer Austin wanted. So he tried something dramatically different.

Five and a half furlongs. Dirt.

On July 21, against ratings optional claiming company at Mountaineer, Enlighten stayed close to the pace and rallied late, missing by a diminishing head.

For Austin, that was the evidence he needed.

“We go three-quarters, we win,” he said.

On Saturday, Austin will find out.

The Ready’s Rocket Express Qualifier will provide a significant test. Enlighten will face established dirt sprinters, including two-time Claiming Crown winner Concrete Glory, who enters with 18 career victories and nearly $600,000 in earnings.

Kerness K also arrives in outstanding form, having won 11 of 19 starts and eight of 10 this year.

The plan is straightforward: let the speed horses use their energy early and give Enlighten an opportunity to make his run late. If Austin is right about the horse, six furlongs could allow Enlighten to turn his greatest attribute into his greatest weapon.

His heart.

The opportunity also fits the spirit of Claiming Crown Showcase Day.

Claiming races form the backbone of the sport. They allow horses to change barns, give owners opportunities to find new runners and challenge trainers to uncover ability that may have been overlooked or expressed differently under another program.

Austin has spent months doing exactly that with Enlighten.

He gave Enlighten time. He listened to other horsemen. He reduced the intensity of his training. He experimented with surface and distance. Rather than let Enlighten’s past performances dictate what he was supposed to be, Austin kept asking what the horse might still become.

Along the way, Enlighten has helped Austin begin rebuilding his stable.

Owners have started calling.

“I got a phone call from Florida,” Austin said. “I’ve got three babies here.”

More horses are coming.

“Things are changing,” he said. “The hard work, the struggle and everything has paid off. And the belief, man.”

Austin remembers once telling Lukas that what he needed most was horses.

Lukas offered a simple response.

“You gotta get lucky.”

Austin sees it a little differently.

“I don’t believe in luck,” he said. “I believe you open doors for yourself, and God’s gotta open doors for you.”

Either way, one door opened when Austin finally won the shake for Enlighten.

Another could open Saturday at Colonial Downs.

A first- or second-place finish sends Enlighten to the Claiming Crown and gives Austin another chance to find out just how far one claim, one horse and one unconventional idea can take him.

“It ain’t over yet.”
