It’s a mad dash to the Wiener’s Circle! Colonial Downs Hosting Adorable and Family Friendly Wiener Dog Races this Saturday
Posted on August 23rd, 2024
NEW KENT COUNTY, Va. (August 23, 2024) – This Saturday, August 24, Colonial Downs will host its most adorable races of the season as at least fifty wiener dogs take to the track for a mad dash to the “Wiener’s Circle” on tiny little legs.
This “Hot Dog Dash” will feature eight heats and a championship race with the winning pup and its human receiving a $1,000 cash prize. Wiener dog racing will take place between races as part of Colonial Downs’ regular Saturday race card of live thoroughbred horse racing
“These wiener dog races are going to be a ton of fun for fans and families who come see us at the track on Saturday, and a really special event for our team members,” said Frank Hopf, Colonial Downs Senior Director of Racing. “Don’t let their size fool you—these dogs are athletes, and they can fly!”
Wiener dog racing was an idea long supported by former Colonial Downs Director of Facilities Bo Scott who passed away in late 2023. The team at Colonial Downs has worked diligently this year to make the idea a reality in his memory.
Of course, there will not be any wagering on these fun and family friendly races, but race fans can still come experience the excitement of live thoroughbred racing throughout the day and get in on the action or simply enjoy some of the most exciting equine athletes from around the region and around the country.
Fans should note that only wiener dogs who have entered the contest and service animals will be allowed in the venue.
Racing season at Colonial Downs continues through the New Kent Virginia Derby on Saturday, September 7.
General admission and convenient guest parking at Colonial Downs are free every day. For an elevated guest experience, Colonial Downs offers reserved Grandstand Seats and Grandstand Box Seats as well as dining options in the Jockey Club restaurant on the third floor and in the 1609 restaurant on the fourth floor.
