SECRETARIAT WINNER SUPERCHARGER HEADLINES FULL FIELD OF 14 FOR GRADE 3 OLD DOMINION DERBY

NEW KENT, Va. (Aug. 31, 2026) — A full field of 14 3-year-olds, led by Grade 2 Secretariat Stakes winner Supercharger, has been entered for the 23rd running of the Grade 3 $500,000 Old Dominion Derby, carded as Race 9. The Old Dominion Derby will be contested at 1⅛ miles on turf.

The Old Dominion Derby headlines Monday’s Labor Day card, which features six turf stakes worth a combined $1.3 million in purses, including the 1 ⅛-mile $250,000 Old Dominion Oaks, which drew 11 3-year-old fillies. The supporting lineup includes the $150,000 Colonial Cup at 1½ miles and the 5½-furlong $150,000 Da Hoss, both for 3-year-olds and older, along with a pair of juvenile stakes: the $125,000 Kitten’s Joy at 1 1/16 miles and the $125,000 Exacta Systems Rosie’s Stakes at 5½ furlongs.

Supercharger, owned by CRK Stable and trained by Cherie DeVaux, returns off the biggest victory of his career in the Grade 2 Secretariat. The Constitution colt rallied from off the pace to capture the one-mile stakes by a half-length, completing a three-race winning streak that began with a Churchill Downs maiden victory May 9 and continued with an allowance score there June 18. Axel Concepcion has the mount from post 14.

DeVaux will also send out Dr. Agne, an Into Mischief colt who won at first asking at Saratoga as a 2-year-old and enters off a July 6 allowance victory at Colonial Downs. He won the one-mile race over Lennox the Grey, who also returns here. Jareth Loveberry rides.

Two entrants come out of Grade 1 company in the Saratoga Derby: The Big Con and Heeere’s Johnny, a full brother to last year’s Old Dominion Derby winner, World Beater. The Big Con, trained by Miguel Clement, won the Grade 3 Grey Stakes at Woodbine as a 2-year-old before finishing fifth in the Saratoga Derby; Heeere’s Johnny, trained by Ray Handal, won the $150,000 Saranac at Saratoga July 3 after multiple stakes placings as a juvenile and now looks to follow his full sibling into the Old Dominion Derby winner’s circle.

While several runners bring graded and stakes credentials, Go For Rocket and Gramp’s Legacy enter with some of the best recent form in the field. Crown’s Way Racing and William Granger’s Go For Rocket, trained by Armando Hernandez, has won two straight since being claimed for $30,000 at Churchill Downs in May, breaking his maiden there June 21 before defeating winners at Ellis Park July 24. Gramp’s Legacy, a Tyler Sliney homebred trained by Jeremiah O’Dwyer, has won three of his last four starts, including back-to-back allowance victories at Colonial Downs July 9 and Aug. 13.

The Old Dominion Derby also attracted several well-bred, lightly raced prospects. Phipps Stable and St. Elias Stable’s homebred Quiet Power, trained by Hall of Famer Shug McGaughey, broke his maiden at Aqueduct June 11; Tiernanogue, trained by Brendan Walsh, won at Churchill Downs April 26 before finishing second in the Audubon Stakes; Siyouincanada (FR), trained by Joe Sharp, earned Thoroughbred Daily News “Rising Star” honors with a Churchill maiden win and later finished third against older horses at Saratoga; and Wertheimer and Frere’s homebred Kravitz, trained by Graham Motion, broke his maiden at Gulfstream Park before finishing second in the Kent Stakes at Delaware Park.

Rounding out the field, Chambersville has been a consistent allowance performer for Kenny McPeek; Drop Shot enters off an Aug. 14 maiden win at Delaware Park for Greg Sacco; Fuzzbuster, trained by Vicki Oliver, finished fourth behind Supercharger in the Secretariat; and Lennox the Grey, trained by Arnaud Delacour, returned from a layoff to finish a close second behind Dr. Agne at Colonial Downs.

The 23rd running of the Old Dominion Derby anchors a stakes-packed Labor Day card that brings the Colonial Downs meet to a close. First post for the 11-race program is noon ET.
