THRILLING OLD DOMINION DERBY CAPS HISTORIC SEASON AT COLONIAL DOWNS RACETRACK

~ In thrilling finishes on the final day of the season, Lennox The Grey wins $500,000 Old Dominion Derby by a nose while Storm’s Wake wins $250,000 Old Dominion Oaks ~

NEW KENT, Va (September 7, 2026)—On the final day of racing in Colonial Downs’ historic 2026 race season, Lennox The Grey won an absolutely thrilling $500,000 Old Dominion Derby by just a nose over second place The Big Con. The $250,000 Old Dominion Oaks was also won by a nose by Storm’s Wake, making this the 3-year-old filly’s eleventh career victory.

“Old Dominion Derby Day was the perfect way to cap off the biggest season of racing in Colonial Downs history,” said Frank Hopf, Senior Director of Racing Operations at Colonial Downs. “This season had a record number of race days, horses in competition, wagering, and prize money, in addition to great entertainment for fans and families on and off the track. Congratulations to all the horses and connections who helped make this historic season such a success!”

Old Dominion Derby winner Lennox The Grey was ridden by Mychel J. Sanchez, trained by Arnaud Delacour, and owned by Willow Pond Stable.

Old Dominion Oaks winner Storm’s Wake was ridden by Samuel Marin, trained by Brian Lynch, and is owned by William K. Werner.

The 2026 live racing season at Colonial Downs featured a record 48 days of live thoroughbred racing including a three day meet in March anchored by the Virginia Derby and a 45-day summer meet that featured the Colonial Downs Festival of Racing and concluded with today’s Old Dominion Derby.

The track now awaits official word on the date of the 2027 Virginia Derby, and whether the race will retain its Kentucky Derby qualifier status for the third consecutive year.
