Colonial Downs Well Represented in 2024 Breeders’ Cup World Championships
Eight horses with ties to Colonial Downs are among the 179 runners entered in this year’s Breeders’ Cup World Championships to be held at Del Mar in Southern California on Friday, November 1 and Saturday, November 2.
On Friday’s card – labeled Future Stars Friday – with five races restricted to 2-year-olds, Colonial is represented by the 1-2 finishers in the Rosie’s Stakes, Governor Sam and Out On Bail, in the G1 $1 million Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint. Paco Lopez retains the mount on the George Weaver-trained Governor Sam (#10, 12-1 morning line odds) while Luis Saez has the call on Out On Bail for trainer Mike Maker (#1 20-1 odds).
Saturday’s G1 $2 million Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf features three horses who have made previous starts at Colonial, most notably 2024 Beverly D. victress Moira (8-1). The Kevin Attard-trained mare drew post 10 in the 13-horse field and will have the services of jockey Flavien Prat. Attard also sends out Full Count Felicia (post 2. 12-1, Irad Ortiz, Jr.) who won an allowance race here in August of 2023.
The Attard-trained duo will be joined in the Filly & Mare Turf by the Argentine-bred Didia, who won the 2022 Old Nelson and was the morning line favorite in the 2023 Beverly D. before having to miss the race because of injury. Jose Ortiz is named to ride the 12-1 longshot for trainer Ignacio Correas, IV from post 5.
South African-bred Isivunguvungu, winner of the Da Hoss Stakes on Sept. 7, looks for his second straight win as he faces an overflow field of 15 (12 plus 3AE) in the G1 $1 million Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint. The Graham Motion charge is listed at 20-1 with Manny Franco aboard from post 10. Nothing Better (#13, Paco Lopez, Jorge Duarte, Jr., 30-1), who finished a neck behind Isivunguvungu in the Da Hoss, is on the also-eligible list and could start if there is a scratch in the field before Friday morning.
Rounding out the starters with Colonial ties is Mufasa (12-1) in the G1 $1 million Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile. The Chilean-bred 5-year-old, trained by Ignacio Correas, IV and to be ridden by Tyler Gaffalione from post 12. Won an allowance race on Aug. 12, the day of the Colonial Downs Festival of Racing.
