VERSATILE ENLIGHTEN GIVES AUSTIN PLENTY OF CLAIMING CROWN SHOWCASE DAY OPTIONS AT COLONIAL DOWNS

NEW KENT, Va. (Aug 6, 2026) — When trainer Keith Austin claimed Enlighten for $15,000 at Fair Grounds in February, he saw something others hadn’t fully explored. Now, six months later, that versatility could make the 5-year-old one of the most intriguing horses on Claiming Crown Showcase Day at Colonial Downs on Saturday, Aug. 22.
For the second consecutive year, Colonial Downs will host qualifying races for the Claiming Crown, with the top two finishers in each qualifier earning automatic berths to the Claiming Crown Championships at Churchill Downs on Nov. 14.
Nine starter handicap races with purses ranging from $50,000 to $100,000 comprise the Showcase Day program, and Enlighten is eligible for five of them. Already proven at 1 1/16 miles on turf, a winner at one mile on dirt and narrowly beaten sprinting 5½ furlongs on the main track, Enlighten’s connections have Claiming Crown Showcase Day circled with his versatility in mind. The 5-year-old horse owned by Charles Beacom has remained competitive across a wide range of company since being claimed, producing quality efforts from the $30,000 claiming level down to the $7,500 level.
Austin will determine the best fit before entries are drawn on Saturday, Aug. 15.
Those possibilities include the $87,500 Emerald Qualifier (1 1/16 miles on turf for horses claimed for $25,000 or less), the $75,000 Canterbury Qualifier (5 1/2 furlongs on turf for horses claimed for $25,000 or less), the $62,500 Rapid Transit Qualifier (seven furlongs on dirt for horses claimed for $16,000 or less), the $50,000 Iron Horse Qualifier (1 1/16 miles on dirt for horses claimed for $8,000 or less) and the $50,000 Ready’s Rocket Express Qualifier (six furlongs on dirt for horses claimed for $8,000 or less).
That range is a testament to a horse effective at multiple distances, on multiple surfaces and against a variety of claiming levels.
A $450,000 yearling purchase, Enlighten began his career in Todd Pletcher’s barn. After two unsuccessful starts on dirt as a 2-year-old, he was switched to turf, where he broke his maiden going one mile at Gulfstream Park. He was later claimed by Tom Morley and eventually campaigned by Mike Maker before Austin purchased him out of a $15,000 claiming race at Fair Grounds.
A former assistant to D. Wayne Lukas, Austin’s first instinct was to try something different.
“This horse doesn’t just have to go long on the grass,” Austin said. “The day I claimed him, I thought he looked like he could go short on the dirt. But I didn’t want to outsmart myself. You’ve got Pletcher, you’ve got Mike Maker—those guys know what they’re doing. They’d been running him on the turf, and other than right at the beginning, they never really tried anything else. Don’t change what isn’t broken, you know?”
His debut for Austin came in a $20,000 claiming race scheduled for one mile on the turf at Evangeline Downs. Rain forced the race onto a sloppy main track, where Enlighten rallied from the back of the field to win by a half-length. His first win on dirt.
Austin kept him on turf for his next two starts at Mountaineer before finally acting on the idea he’d had from the day he claimed him.
“But then I said, ‘Let me take a chance here,'” Austin said. “If he shows up and shows me he can do it, then he can get there.”
On July 21, he shortened Enlighten to 5½ furlongs, moved him to the dirt and entered him in a ratings optional claiming race, allowing the horse to compete while remaining protected from a claim. Over a sloppy, sealed track, Enlighten missed by only a head after a determined stretch battle.
That performance only expanded Enlighten’s options heading into Colonial Downs.
Whether Austin ultimately chooses a turf route, dirt route, turf sprint or dirt sprint, Enlighten embodies what Claiming Crown Showcase Day celebrates: durable, hard-knocking horses whose versatility and consistency have earned them the chance to compete for lucrative purses and a spot in the Claiming Crown Championships.
